Coil Bowl Workshop for Teens and Adults 

Tuesday Oct 24, 6pm-7:30pm! 

Join artists Petra Floyd (40th Street AIR '16-'17) and Joy Ude at the Lucien E. Blackwell Library (125 South 52nd (52nd St. and Sansom St.) ) to learn basic coiling techniques to transform plain cotton cording into colorful coiled bowls!

This FREE workshop is a great starting point for textile and fiber beginners, but will also give advanced students new approaches and skills for surface design. This workshop is presented with the support of the 40th Street Artist in Residence Program.

Join the 40th Street Artist-in-Residence Program (aka AIR) as we open our studios and gallery to the public for TWO DAYS! Saturday October 14, 12-6pm and Sunday October 15, 12-6pm

We are located in TWO buildings---4007 Chestnut first floor where you will find Artist Liaison Wit Lopez and guest artist Lorraine Glessner (in the gallery) AND 4013 Chestnut first and second floors where you will find the studios of residents Khiry Worrell, Muthi Reed, Santiago Galeas, Josh Graupera, and Margaret Kearney! 

Learn about their artistic process, buy work, and maybe even make some art. Refreshments will be provided at both buildings.

Philadelphia Open Studio Tours (POST), a program of The Center for Emerging Visual Artists, offers a behind-the-scenes look at a day in the life of a visual artist. This October, explore hundreds of artist studios and community partner spaces in more than twenty Philadelphia neighborhoods and see the artistic process unfold right in your own backyard. 

POST, the largest open studio tours in the region, spotlights the vitality of Philadelphia’s visual arts scene and underscores the important contributions artists make to our city’s economic and civic life. Great for all ages, this citywide festival features studio visits, hands-on demos, workshops, artist talks, receptions, exhibitions and more—all through an approachable and easy-to-navigate, self-guided tour.

Eva Wǒ (evawo.com) is a mixed race queer femme originally from New Mexico and now solidly based in Philadelphia. Her work examines, celebrates, and creates visibility for queer and marginalized individuals and underground communities. She takes a collaborative approach that honors the entire being, with limitless gender and sexual expression, free of stereotypes and subjugation, and enables those she works with as creative agents of contemporary culture making.

Please help AIR alumni Brujo de la Mancha

Dear Friends,

We are writing to humbly request help for one of our alumni and friends. Brujo de la Mancha, a supremely generous and talented artist, musician, scholar, and community worker who was a 2014-2015 40th Street Artist-in-Residence and our 2015-2016 Artist Liaison, has been working with the U.S. immigration system for 15 years but has hit a wall and, sadly, needs to look for home elsewhere. He is in the process of applying for a visa that will allow him to live in Canada, but he needs at least $10,000 for fees, tests, and savings account requirements. 

Many friends are pitching in to make sure Brujo can get to Canada and start his new life in peace so we ask that you join our efforts however you can. Please read below for info on Brujo, an online fundraising campaign, and two benefit events.

Opening April 7 & April 25! Wit's Wonderland & The Cabinet of Curiosities

Join us on Friday, April 7th at 6pm at our gallery, 4007 Chestnut Street First Floor, for the opening reception of resident Whitney P. Lopez's solo exhibition. The exhibition will feature work that Lopez created in the studio during the first 7 months of their residency. Visitors are invited to immerse themselves into Lopez's fiber art by engaging with the directions as listed on each piece. Enjoy the absurdity of the exhibition and become a part of it!

In addition to Whitney's personal work, there will be a smaller show within the show. The "Cabinet of Curiosities" will feature the artwork of 40 QTPOC artists from around the U.S. and across the globe. 

Since the 40th Street AIR Gallery is not wheelchair accessible, there will be a second reception on Tuesday, April 25th at The Rotunda at 4014 Walnut Street that is wheelchair accessible. Both receptions are accessible to individuals with low-vision, and the blind.

Exhibition is free and open to the general public. As always, refreshments will be served.

Hello my name is James Ruff and I'm an artist and a hobbyist in most cases. I'm pretty awkward and I can do good things with my hands. Currently, I'm preparing to release a project called Mathematician in late 2017. It's a story about a teen whose accelerated skills in mathematics lands him in an outlandish adventure that will test basic principles of morality.

Once a year, the resident artists of 40th Street Artist-in-Residence Program (AIR), invite guests to exhibit work in our gallery. These guest artist come from a wide-array of backgrounds, from child to senior citizen, trained artist to self-taught,  and of course friends and neighbors!!! This year, we will hold three distinct events as part of this exhibition and we hope that you will join us for all of them!

Opening Reception: Friday, Jan. 13th  (Today), 6:00PM- 9:00PM with informal talks from the artists and light refreshments at 7:00PM.

Free Community Dinner: Saturday, Jan 28th, 4:00PM- 8:00PM with Buffet style catering provided by FoodEveryoneDesrves

Closing Art Swap Event: Friday, Feb. 10th, 6:00PM- 8:00PM Everyone is encourage to bring one piece of art (crafted by any one) to trade along with others.
