40th Street AIR resident Brenna K. Murphy pres.“Planning: Childhood Drawings Revisited” solo show

40th  Street AIR resident Brenna K. Murphy
presents
“Planning: Childhood Drawings Revisited”
at our AIRSPACE Gallery

By adhering single strands of her hair to paper, Brenna has re-created her childhood drawings that depict floor plans of imaginary houses. Her nomadic upbringing - moving eight times and living in six states by the age of eighteen - inspires her work about home and domesticity. Reflecting on the objects found in domestic spaces, the physical environments in which we dwell, and the human body, she strives to understand how materiality interacts with psychological processes to form our concepts and ideals of home.  With "Planning: Childhood Drawings Revisited," Brenna explores how young children intuitively process challenging emotional experiences through art, and celebrates their capacity for fresh, uninhibited mark-making while drawing.

Illuminations: Selected work by artists from local state-funded art centers

Representing participants of:
PDDC's Cultural Art Center
Oasis Art Center (RHD)
Center for Creative Works (RHD)
Outside the Frame Collective (CIS)

This exhibition, curated by a number of our current residents, highlights artwork by participants of four local art centers that serve adults living with mental health struggles and/or intellectual or physical disabilities. Programs like these - that create a nurturing atmosphere and strive to integrate marginalized members of our community through the arts - have struggled with massive funding cuts in recent years. We hope that this exhibition helps to increase awareness of the amazing contribution these members of our community have to offer.

The exhibit runs February 14-March 1
Opening Reception: Friday February 21, 6-9pm
Gallery hours: Saturdays Feb 15, 22, and March 1, 1-4pm, or by appointment (please email 40th.air.app@gmail.com)
At AIRSPACE Gallery, 4007 Chestnut St, 1st Floor
